Debut Women’s Fiction Writer

Lisa Burke, a recent college graduate, is desperate for money but also has a desire to prove her worth in an era of changing customs and values.
The good old boy network is irritated when she is hired as the first female supervisor at a century-old textile mill. They are not pleased with the disruption of their conventions, nor are the wives who are suspicious of a young woman working with their men.
Despite sexual harassment, dirty tricks, and gossip, Lisa gains acceptance of the community members. Her career and reputation, however, are jeopardized by an ethical dilemma presented by upper management. Against her better judgement, she issues a written warning to Moose, a reticent young man, when a hostile employee, Wanda, accuses him of sexual harassment. The accuser is later found dead by the millpond. Suspicion is cast on several people, but Lisa is one of the top suspects. The results of the investigation and subsequent actions result in massive changes in the sleepy town of New Ridge, South Carolina, and for Lisa.

"This is a wonderful novel with a good sense of humor and dialogue. I cannot imagine any female readers from 16-91 who would not identify with the conflicts so richly portrayed."

"I was drawn to the main character, Lisa Burke in the first few pages and cheered for her along the way. UNWELCOME SIGNS is filled with nuanced characters. I was secretly delighted by some of the bad characters. They provided glimpses into a world I have overlooked. I could NOT put this book down."
